Profile: Would That It Were is a quarterly publication specializing in historical science fiction (such as that written by H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Mary Shelley).

Publication Needs: WTIW publishes historical science fiction. "Stories submitted should contain an element of science and a tie to the 19th or early 20th Century." They do not accept westerns, ghost stories, or medieval fantasy/heroic epics.

Story Length: Stories should be no longer than 3,000 words unless work has been previously reviewed by the publisher. (WTIW prefers 1,500 words from new authors.) Flash fiction: 500 words. Short-shorts: 501 - 3,000 words. Short stories: 3,001 - 5,000 words. (Works larger than 3,000 words must be previously approved.)

Rights Purchased: WTIW requires First North American Serial Rights. Rights revert to author after the publication issue has been archived.

Payment Terms: Payment will be verified post-acceptance. Current rates are listed as follows: Flash fiction will pay $.05 - $.10/word (up to $50.00). Short-shorts will pay $.03 - $.05/word (up to $150.00). Short stories will pay $.03 - $.05/word (up to $250.00).

Submission Guidelines: Work should be submitted through e-mail according to submission guidelines. (WTIW requests that specific text be included in the body of the e-mail message, with the story itself as an attachment.) They do not accept hardcopy submissions. Stories that have not been edited and include common usage errors are considered "unacceptable" submissions. (They do not note whether they accept simultaneous submissions.)

Response Time: No response time is noted.

Publisher's Notes: WTIW receives hundreds of submissions per issue, so writers should follow the submission guidelines carefully in order to be considered for publication.
