The Vestal Review

Profile: The Vestal Review is a free, quarterly e-zine, which focuses on flash fiction (short-shorts). VR considers this one of the more difficult forms of fiction to write, as authors must condense a cohesive plot, rich language, and enticing imagery into 500 words or less.
Publication Needs: The Vestal Review is open to all genres except children's stories, hard science fiction, and pornography. Stories should be flash fiction only.
Story Length: Stories must be no longer than 500 words.
Rights Purchased: The Vestal Review requires First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Publishing Rights. They will also request archiving and anthology rights. A contract is required for published works. (See guidelines for details.) VR does not accept previously published work and requests that accepted work be withheld from other publications for an additional 120 days after publication with The Vestal Review.
Payment Terms: VR will pay 10 cents per word for up to 100 words; 5 cents per word for 101 - 200 words; 3 cents per word for 201 - 500 words; and stories of great merit will receive a flat fee of $25.00. (3 cents per word is the minimum pay.)
Submission Guidelines: Submissions should be pasted into the body of an e-mail; attachments will not be accepted. VR will accept simultaneous submission; however, they request notification should the work be accepted for publication elsewhere. Work should be submitted only during the appropriate reading period, which is listed on the site. The submission guidelines should be followed carefully in order to be considered for publication. VR accepts up to eight pieces per issues; however, authors may submit only three pieces per reading period.
Response Time: The Vestal Review responds within two months.
Publisher's Notes: The Vestal Review receives a large number of submissions, so they tend to be very selective. Work should be of the highest quality.
