Profile: Lulu is an online marketplace for digital content. This unique, online community allows authors, musicians, and artists the ability to publish their work at no charge. Authors control the process and retain all rights. The website also allows members (membership is free) to collaborate with others.

Distribution Type: Lulu provides authors with the tools they need to produce their work in e-book format or print-on-demand. (Some tools may include a charge.) Authors may choose the distribution type of their work; however, Lulu recommends that the distribution type remain cross-platform.

Services: Although Lulu provides authors with the tools they need to publish for free, they also offer additional resources. Fee-based services include basic editing, custom cover creation, customized marketing material, ISBN setup, and expanded distribution services.

Submission Guidelines: Authors must register with Lulu in order to begin uploading work or collaborating with others. The registration process is simple and free. To submit your work after registering, Lulu provides an easy-to-use interface where authors can upload a completed book in .DOC, .PDF, or .RTF format. Authors may also upload chapters, media, or a collection of work. Lulu provides the tools for authors to use in managing a "storefront" to view sales information.

Turnaround: The process can take as little as fifteen minutes depending on the format of submission.

Royalties and Retail: Authors set the price for the published work and receive 80% royalties. Lulu receives 20% of sales. (If the work does not sell, Lulu does not receive a percentage.) Authors receive royalty checks every quarter and have access to real-time royalty tracking.

Copyright: The author maintains and is responsible for acquiring copyright.

Markets: Authors may submit work of any genre.
