Profile: AuthorHouse (formerly 1stBooks) assists writers in formatting, publishing, and distributing their work in a variety of formats.

Distribution Type: Includes 3 different size options for paperback distribution; 2 different size options for hardcopy distribution; color books (you may choose from 2 size options); or e-book format. (Audio books may also become available.)

Services: AuthorHouse offers widespread distribution; promotions; manuscript formatting (for printer specifications); basic cover creation (if required); a web page with author bio, book description, and sample pages; and referrals to editors and cover artists. They also offer some basic editing services. (Some services may include additional fees.)

Submission Guidelines: AuthorHouse will accept electronic submissions through the mail as well as hardcopy submissions. (There is a fee for data entry or page scans.) They prefer Microsoft Word submissions but may do conversions from other formats for an additional charge. Manuscript format is unspecified.

Turnaround: The process could take about 3 - 6 months depending on the type of book. (Books received in their final versions have a turnaround closer to three months.)

Royalties and Retail: Royalty amounts change based on book type and sales amount. Authors get to choose their royalties, from 5% to 50%, as well as the retail price of their book from a set list of options. (However, choosing a higher royalty payment may set your book at a higher retail price.) The fees charged for e-book publication are, in part, considered a deposit. The author will receive quarterly sales reports.
