I'm thinking about publishing my book. What does that take?
That depends on whether you plan to publish traditionally or self-publish. Publishing the traditional way remains a difficult and time-consuming process, but we'd be glad to walk you through your options if that's the route you'd like to take. Alternatively, self-publishing has become very popular because it is fast, inexpensive, and can lead to positive results; however, there's sometimes a catch.

Print-on-demand technology has made it easy to print a book. But that doesn't mean the process is easy. Many publishers require that you have an understanding of the publishing process as a whole; for instance, you're required to supply them with a book cover and interior files that meet printer specifications. They will throw terms at you like bleed and trim and transparencies, font embedding, pdf/x-1a compliant, crop marks, margins, and gutters, etc. (ad nauseam). And what about professional copyediting? Traditionally published books go through at least three separate phases of editing. They have a team of editors and designers working for you, but what if you decide to self-publish your work? Who will act as your team?

We also offer FREE publishing consultations! The process is confusing, and we know first-hand how hard it is to get live people on the phone. We actually like authors, so we're happy to talk with you about your book and your publishing goals. We're also pretty straight-forward, so we'll tell you when something just doesn't sit right. (Like Amazon's Booksurge. Or those writing contests that want you to send in a large check in exchange for a six-month wait on pins and needles culminating in a one-sentence form-letter rejection.) We can also help you choose the printer or publisher that will best suit your needs; guide you through the pre-production process; and direct you to the best resources for information on copyright protection, retail pricing, distribution, and what it takes to get your book in popular retail markets.
